brand new ish...

one of my favorite sites to hit up, when i have the time (which is all the time) to sit on the internet, is conceptart.org. (see links on the right) through that site, i come across many outrageously good pieces of digital (and traditional) art and artist's sites. one of these sites i happened on in my perusals was www.velinov.com i really dig his style and the energy in his art and i wanted to try my hand at doing someting in the same type of style, check it out...

speaking of dopeness attached to a great cause, a few week weeks ago i caught a program that featured an organization that facilitates microloans to people in developing countries: www.kiva.org. the essence of it is giving individuals in the developing world the opportunity to start businesses in their communities while also giving people who want to help, the chance to do so on a more personal level. it is not just a faceless donation, it is an investment in the lives of others; and the organization works to help people both start their business, and repay the loans. it definitely was dope to see how these small loans affect the lives of people trying to make a better way for themselves/families...

it is a good look for films in 07

2007 is shaping up to be a good year for action flicks, check the leaked trailer for 300, an adaptation based on frank miller's graphic novel 300 which was centers around the Battle of Thermopylae and is also influenced by the 1962 film, The 300 Spartans

between this, ghost rider (nicholas cage?), sin city 2, spiderman 3 (which i am not really to fond of-besides my opinion that kirsten dunst and tobey maguire pretty much suck as mary jane & spiderman [though i will admit to tobey not being so bad as much, dunst just does will never cut it as mary jane...] respectively-the fact that the symbiote suit will be donned in the film and that venom will make an appearance, put it on my to see list), TMNT (teenage mutant ninja turtles in case you ain't know!), transformers, and about 3 or 4 other movies that are slated for release 2-double O 7 is lookin good...

i woke up early on my born day...

...i'm twenty (five), years of blessing
the essence of adolescent leaves my body now Im fresh in
my physical frame is celebrated cause I made it
one quarter through life some god-ly like thing created...

from nas' classic lp illmatic

today the kid is a quarter century old...when put in that form it seems like a much longer period of time, in some respect it seems like time has flown by. i do not quite feel like an old man yet, though i can remember clearly when i was younger calling my aunts and otherpeople ancient, when they were this age...

just have to try and get focused, before i say hi to 30 (whaddup)...

i got myself a plan, i hope to see it through...

happy b-day to meeeeeeee!!!!

on a related note: when did they outlaw sprinkles on birthday cakes??? you know the old school cakes with the sprinkles all around the sides...it is ridiculous that i can not seem to find these type of birthdqay cakes anywhere...they just do not make b-day cakes like the used to...i blame the terrorists. when will bakers realize; if we do not have sprinkle on birthday cakes, the terrorists win...

this can not be for serious...

politics are so foul nowadays...it is near impossible to align to, much less agree with, anything that comes from either camp. now the political parties are contracting hollywood cats (this one by producer david zucker) to create their mudslingin' spots...wow...it is funny though. the gop knows how get it down, check it out

speed demon...

so this past weekend i finally got a chance to take the msf class (Motorcycle Saftey Foundation), and i must say it was really fly. i did not anticipate it being so easy to balance/ride a motorcycle...now controling it...that was a lil' bit harder! i did pretty well on the riding part and i aced the written test, so now i can proceed to go and get my m-class license. it was a great class and i would recommend it to all those interested of 2-wheel riding...

some pics from the weekend...

pic from the bike, here we were watching the other students take the riding portion of the test...

it was a very cool class, after i get a bike i will probably take it again (it is pretty much free) to sharpen up & get more tips..

hard to believe 5 years ago today...

the towers came down. it simultaneously seems as blunted as though it were an eternity ago and as vivid in my mind just as if it happenend yesterday...we have had this book at our house for a minute, never really looked through it all until today. ithe images in it are powerful, showing the courage of the people of nyc. it is unfortunate that it takes tragedy to bring people together, if only everyone could have the same compassion for all people of the world...maybe events like 9/11, what is/was going on in sudan, and the continual termoil in the middle east would not be so common.

god bless the world...

Heroes in a half-shell - Turtle Power!!!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Heroes in a half-shell - Turtle Power

They’re the world’s most fearsome fighting teens (we're really hip)
They’re heroes in a half shell and they’re green, (hey! get a grip!)
When the evil Shredder attacks,
These turtles boys don't cut him no slack.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Splinter taught them to be ninja teens (he's a radical rat)
Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines (that's a fact chap)
Raphael is cool but crude, (gimme' a break)
Michaelangelo is a party dude (Hurray!!)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Heroes in a half shell,
Turtle power!

cool hunters or makers of cool???

i came upon this link some days ago, to a pbs frontline show about marketing media and its desire to capture all that disposable $$$$$ in the pockets of the teenage demographic. One phenomenon it describes, is the seemingly endless loop of influence and interpretation that goes on between the media and its target audience wherein the dinstinction between who is actually driving the youth culture is blurred. It is an interesting parallel to design, do designers interpret culture or play an active role in creating it? part of a designers tasks is to create a product that fits what its end user needs/wants but also hopefully that product can spawn its own place in culture where it changes the way we do/look/think about things...

it is also funny to read the comments of the group of teens who were asked to watch it, who saw it as something ominous (which is sort the tone of the show anyway) as it were something to be feared. while the approach may be new in its cultural pervasiveness, it does not appear to be new in its goal: alleviating anyone who has money to spend of that income...

tagline for the show: They are the merchants of cool: creators and sellers of popular culture who have made teenagers the hottest consumer demographic in America. But are they simply reflecting teen desires or have they begun to manufacture those desires in a bid to secure this lucrative market? And have they gone too far in their attempts to reach the hearts--and wallets--of America's youth?

in case you did not know, dave chappelle is officially THAT dude!!!...

i admire the fact that he was willing to take a loss (i know he ain't starving but 50 mil, ouch son!!!) for an ideal, (some even note more sinister reasons) no matter how crazy i think the rationaliation of it was, i wish he would come back and do his show. he is a really talented, intelligent, and super-humanly funny brother. he took risks with his comedy, skits about a blind black klansman, a racial draft, and a junkie named tyrone, were classic! it worked on not only on a superficial level but also as social commentary, it was not just offensive just for shock value (ok maybe some stuff was but it was hilarious regardless)

come back dave...

i did these sketchees when i was thinking of making the "wrap it box" from a skit on the chappelle show into a product project, i think it could be fun to do...

i wrote this post, a long time ago, a real long time ago...

job hunting sucks...

job hunting sucks...

i can really do is keep my fingers crossed and hope that someone sees something worth giving me a chance. all things considered, if i was not such a lazy bum i might have a job (or at least some contacts to get interviews) lined up after graduation. i have pretty much been straight loungin'. i do not really have a clear vision of what i want to do for next few of years of my life...all i know is i would like to design stuff, preferably athletic shoes because i have a passion for it but i would be checking for anything that would allow for a fun, learning, stimulating place to work

i have divergent interests a not enough time to pursue them all. then there is the portfolio i need to finish, making things worse, right now i am firmly entrenched in the BBC (Broke Brothers Club) have no funds! i would like to be able to help out my fam more with bills and such, but i can not even get a part time gig at local walmart!!!

hopefully things will look up though, i have a few opportunities that might turn into something good, for know i sit in front of the computer and try to paint stuff...

chillin' like a villan

ok so lately i have been dragging my feet, most of my time being split between playing basketball, random periods of sleep, occasional attemps to organize my work into a website, and too much time on the internet...(notice finishing my portfolio is conspicuously missing from that list, but that is another topic...) however my time on the net has not been a total waste of bandwith, in my travels i managed to stumble across wikipedia.org. the site is amazing!!!

i am sure i have used it before but maybe i just did not take note? it is basically a site where anyone (it supports over a 200 different languages) can create/edit information on any topic, it is not always completely accurate. some stuff is incomplete or from biased viewpoints (and it is usually noted if the article is sans references or incomplete) but from sports to astrophysics it is all there, likely every subject you could ever think of...

anyway i was reading a wiki about some comic books and i saw the work of alex ross, which prompted me to get a couple of his graphic novels...amazing stuff! so for the past couple weeks i have been going to library checking out other comics and related books, i have always had an affinity for comics but it got lost in the shuffle of my carousel of interests ,and reading and seeing all the content from the wiki just rekindled that previous attraction.

so with that as inspiration, lately i have been trying to mess around with painting, but not only is traditional painting messy, it is also a fairly expensive hobby, so photoshop and a wacom tablet are my tools of choice, trying to do stuff i do not usually do so i figured i try my hand at digital painting, this was the result...
